Social Media And Online Business Changed How I Run My Physical Optical P...

The process of learning about online business and social media marketing opened my eyes to the world of possibility that currently exists for all small business owners.

Taking the tools, strategies and systems and repurposing them for my own business has enabled me to go from working 5-6 days per week to only two days. In doing so I am now generating more income and have more free time to spend with my family and to develop and explore other income generating options outside my own small business.

Getting informed about the online business world is a form of up-skilling.
Technology has changed so rapidly in recent years, small business and established professional practices have found it difficult to adapt to the change.
Adapt you must, in order to grow and thrive.

Follow and subscribe to my journey and I hope I can provide you and your business with some value along the way :).

7 Vital Ways to Master the Art of Delegating

May 29, 2018 0
7 Vital Ways to Master the Art of Delegating

Somewhere along the way in my career, I picked up a good nugget of advice, and it was to focus as a leader on those tasks which were unique to me and delegate the rest.

One of the toughest things about being a leader and manager is mastering that ability. It's not easy for a variety of reasons, including the idea that only you can do something better and faster, impatience, or lack of awareness.
Unfortunately, there are many managers out there who have not developed enough to follow the advice of focusing on what is unique to your position. And, if you're an entrepreneur, there's a higher chance that you could be someone who might have a hard time delegating. In start-up situations, many entrepreneurs end up wearing many hats, and it becomes difficult to let go, but it is crucial to the ultimate success of your business.
As your company begins to take off and grow, one of the most important skills you can master is to learn how to delegate.
  1. Think about those responsibilities that are unique to your position. As a leader and manager, one of the first activities you should do is to carefully consider all of the tasks that you do on a given day. Then, ask yourself if you should be the person doing it. When you go through this exercise, it will help you prioritize the issues you should be taking care of and will ultimately have more time to focus on doing.
  2. Consider the dollars and cents.Once you've decided to delegate, you will open up more time that was spent doing the busy work. Like most people, you probably think in terms of dollars and cents or profit margins. Hiring someone, even part-time, that will take over a lot of the process work that you're doing is going to free up your time to dedicate it to the areas that will grow your business.
  3. Don't fall into the micro-management trap. Micro-managers love to say that they are delegating their non-essential responsibilities, only to micro-manage their teams. Proper delegation does not mean that you are absolving yourself of any of the accountability for the work. Delegation just says that you are giving the responsibility to someone else, and you have to give them the opportunity to do the job and rise to the occasion.
  4. Maintain a strong feedback flow with your team. When you've delegated responsibilities to your team members, an essential aspect of proper delegation means keeping an adequate communication channel open for any questions, comments or concerns. Again, it doesn't mean that it's a chance for you to micro-manage a one-way feed system. It's a two-way feedback flow and an easy tactic to ensure it's done correctly is to request regular updates on the work.
  5. Make sure that you provide clear directives or instructions. When you've decided to create a productive delegation system, one of the essential aspects of delegation is to deliver clear instructions or direction from the outset. If you're expecting a certain project to look a certain way, have elements you deem important or are looking for a specific outcome, it's vital that you express those thoughts from the outset.
  6. Remember that your team members are learning how to do something you've delegated, and learning is not a linear process. Be prepared for mistakes or a learning curve. You should also expect to be pleasantly surprised when someone has done something in a way you wouldn't have thought but is still excellent. Learning is not linear, and as a manager, you have to be prepared for some bumps and pleasant surprises on the road.
  7. Let it go.The final aspect of mastering the art of delegation is to stay out of the way and let go. When you've assigned responsibilities and informed your team members what they need to get done, then you have to allow them to do the work. Focus on the duties you should be focusing on as a leader and let your team do what they have to do to meet your goals for success.
Remember that delegation is not something that often comes naturally, especially if you're a business owner and you're looking to get a new company off the ground.

However, whether you work in an established firm or start-up, understanding how to be a self-aware manager who delegates is going to reap many rewards. It will help empower your team, and it will give you the ability to truly focus and concentrate on the aspects of the job that crucially need your undivided attention.

Why Be Your Industry Influencer? Business Growth Leveraging Your Personal Brand

March 24, 2018 0
Why Be Your Industry Influencer? Business Growth Leveraging Your Personal Brand
Marketing is like sex. Everyone thinks they're good at it.
- Steve Tobak

We are in a golden age of solopreneurs: independent, innovative experts who are turning the traditional working model on its head.

No longer content with working under layers of organisational management, workers around the globe are increasingly making the decision to take full control of their careers. To carve their own niche and capitalise on their skills. To join the solo revolution.
And you are one of them. A revolutionary!
Creating your own brand has never been easier. With the explosion of social media, solopreneurs have immediate access to billions of people around the world. You can speak directly to anyone, anywhere, at any time. Likewise, the number of services and products consumers have instant access to is infinite. Neither business nor buyer is bound by location anymore.
It is an incredibly liberating age. But it's also one that some entrepreneurs and businesses find overwhelming.
We're Living in a Digital-First World
In his book Ctrl Alt Delete, Mitch Joel discusses the term "digital first". He reveals the five key movements that organisations must embrace to future-proof themselves - or go out of business. One of these shifts is the fact that now, the first place your brand and business are validated is online. Essentially, the internet and social media have the power to make or break your chances of success.
Serial entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk is a great example of how to cultivate a successful business by leveraging digital media. Born in the Soviet Union in 1975, Vaynerchuk immigrated to the United States in 1978. From humble beginnings, his father went on to own a liquor store in New Jersey. In the early days of the digital-first world, Vaynerchuk could see the burning potential of his father's business. After graduating from college, Vaynerchuk transformed the liquor shop into a retail wine store, which he named the Wine Library. In 2006, he started a daily video blog, Wine Library TV. This hugely popular webcast turned him into an internet celebrity. It attracted 90,000 viewers a day and led to a flurry of TV and speaking engagements. In just six years, Vaynerchuk grew the family business from $1 million a year to a whopping $50 million a year.
Not too bad for a small family business, right?
So, as you can see, traditional marketing has been blown out of the water.

We're no longer restricted to cold calling and setting up meeting after meeting to generate leads and sales. Digital marketing has opened an array of cost-effective avenues for self-promotion and lead generation. Sales are now about leveraging your social networks, engaging with people online and educating.
This is, essentially, the social sales model: (see link below)
Today, the businesses and entrepreneurs that make the most impact on their audiences are role models. They're trusted advisers who create tribes - powerful online communities that help their brands grow. They educate and provide solutions. They've jumped on board the social sales train and embrace the connection economy whole-heartedly. Because if you don't, you get left behind.
But we can't rest on our laurels. We must build on this massive sales reform and look to the future. We must become industry ambassadors. We must become thought leaders who engage meaningfully with our followers, share generously of our expertise and regard our audiences not just as leads or dollar signs, but as lifetime partnerships.
Why Stand Out from the Crowd
Solopreneurs are the way of the future. They account for 61% of Australian businesses[1]. And with the advent of freelance sites such as Upwork, 99designs, Freelancer and Airtasker, an increasing number of Australians are freelancing. According to freelance marketplace Elance-oDesk, 30% of the Australian workforce - or 3.7 million people - undertake some sort of freelance work[2].

Digital marketing presents an enormous opportunity for solopreneurs. According to Ipsos Open Thinking Exchange, the average person spends two hours a day on the internet. Furthermore, IBM's Global CEO Study found that CEOs believe social media utilisation for customer engagement will increase by 256% over five years. This means social media will become the second-most popular way to engage customers after face-to-face communication.
Social media has created a level playing field. It's cheap and readily available. You don't need large amounts of money to build a business. You don't even need an existing client base - you can start one from scratch online. The internet has given everyone the potential to create a successful solo business.
But there's a downside to this equal opportunity. Despite the accessibility of social media, one of the biggest challenges entrepreneurs continue to face is finding leads and retaining clients.
The digital marketplace means you're competing against everyone else with a business like yours. You can't simply create a LinkedIn or Facebook account and expect clients to come to you. How will they know you're there? What makes you stand out? When everyone else is pushing their own unique selling point, what will make people choose you?
In a world where customers have immediate access to information on every kind of business around the world, it's hard to cut through the noise. To gain that competitive edge, you must create a connection.
Being a solopreneur is not enough. You must bond with your audience by offering more than your products and services alone. You need to educate, lead and gain trust. You need to make a real difference to the lives of your clients.

Position, Position, Position
Positioning is fundamental to creating trust and having influence. It's more than just creating an image. It's about owning your space in your industry. It's about flexing your expertise, starting conversations, changing the game, creating engaging content and enlightening others. It's about being the go-to expert for peers and clients needing guidance.
And it's what leads to sales.
When you have a rock-solid positioning, your return on investment is second to none. Digital media and technology company Burst Media's 2014 Influencer Marketing Benchmarks Report found that on average, marketers who implemented an Influencer marketing program in 2014 received $6.85 in earned media value for every $1 of paid media.[3] The primary tools used in Influencer marketing were:
  • Blog posts
  • Social syndication and branded content distribution
  • Influencers and influential content
Blogs. Content. Social media. These are indispensable, cost-effective tools if you want to elevate your positioning from business owner to leading industry expert. And they are what will build your audience's trust in you.
If people like you, they'll listen to you, but if they trust you, they'll do business with you.

No More Excuses for Small Business Owners for Not Growing Their Businesses

March 16, 2018 0
No More Excuses for Small Business Owners for Not Growing Their Businesses

When talking about business related issues, solutions, and technologies, you will almost always group businesses as small and large. While the separation is there, it won't be wrong to say that in a modern where digital technologies prevail, it should not be a problem for small businesses to compete with large ones.

The large corporations have the advantage of having more resources without a doubt. However, there was not a time in the past when growing and expanding was as easy for small businesses as it is today.
Digital Marketing for Everyone
Digital marketing starts with a website today. When it comes to website designs, more money does not always mean a better design. If you are working with the right people and are clear about your requirements, your website can be just as impressive as the website of a large business. In fact, internet users today are more in favor of simplistic websites with a focus on the information they are looking for rather than the glitter and sparkle.
As for social media marketing, there is no difference in the size of the market that small and large businesses have to target. They are both targeting global audiences and how good they are at it is not defined by how much money they put in their marketing efforts. Social media marketing is free marketing, so there is no excuse as to who has more resources.

And if you believe that the large corporations make it to the top of the search engine results, you always have a better and more effective niche to compete within - local. With local search engine optimization, small businesses can compete with the medium and large businesses head to head. In simple words, regardless of the size of the business, everyone has access to the same market and same people today. What matters is who does it better.
Digital Solutions Are Available Specifically for Small Businesses
When it comes to software solutions for businesses, the focus is not on large corporations anymore. Today, all types of software solutions have their versions built specifically for small businesses. These digital solutions allow small businesses to cut down their costs and make use of the same technologies that large companies are using.
Take the example of CRMs. At one point, there was a notion that customer relationship management software are only for large businesses, but the things have changed quite a bit today. Web-based CRM are a revelation for small businesses. First, these CRMs provide great marketing, database, customer service and sales solutions to the businesses. Second, they are unbelievably affordable. If you own a small business, you don't even have to worry about software integration, hardware compatibility, updates, and upgrades, etc. Keep in mind that with in-house solutions, these are the costs that make it difficult for small businesses to grow financially.
With web-based solutions designed for small businesses, you can now have access to a world-class CRM at a fractional monthly or yearly cost. Other affordable digital solutions available include invoicing software, bookkeeping software, payroll software, etc.
Customers Have the Power in Hands
The Internet has empowered customers like never before. You can't say that just because a business is in multiple countries, it will be impressive enough for people to buy its products. The amazing thing about today's economy is the power that customers have in their hands.

Online reviewing websites, YouTube videos, blogs, etc. are among many platforms that allow customers to know more about businesses. In fact, even Google now puts business ratings and customer reviews right within its search results.
What this means is that when a customer searches for a business today, he/she is already able to see the reputation of the product they are going to buy. Furthermore, negative reviews from customers can greatly affect the sales of business, giving other businesses a chance to make their name.
Furthermore, it's not just the quality of products that matters today. In the modern world, businesses are competing for better customer experience. If your business can give customers the experience they are looking for, your growth is inevitable despite the small size of your business.
Funding Is No Issue for Startups
It is always the starting days that matter the most for business. When you are a startup, you are looking for ways to fund your business so you can materialize your idea and polish your product/service according to the requirements of the customers. Finding a platform where you could connect with investors was a challenge in the past. This is not an issue anymore.

With like our websites, it is easier than ever for small businesses to get in touch with investors and get the right amount of investment that sets them on the path of growth. These are websites that act as a bridge between investors from all around the world and startups. With traditional banks and lenders, you are only limited to a local audience of investors. When you can't find an investor in your local market, your hopes are almost dead.
With online funding websites, all you have to do is create a convincing pitch that explains the viability of your startup to the investors and its scope. Your pitch along with all the necessary information that you think investors should see goes on the website where it is visible to hundreds and thousands of investors. If you have done your homework and have a team of right professionals on board, getting the right investment is just a matter of hours or days.
Final Words
You can see that a small business can overcome almost all of their challenges much more efficiently today. Starting a business has become so easy that even students can be entrepreneurs today. They can lay the foundation for a business using just their pocket money. From connecting with the right investors to cutting down operational costs, all can be done from the comfort of a person's home. The only thing that makes the difference today is if you are confident enough to take the first step.

How To Deal With Too Much Work

February 08, 2018 0
How To Deal With Too Much Work

An online entrepreneur will always be busy but more work doesn't necessarily mean better results.
Sometimes, when trying to do everything yourself, nothing gets done very well. Aside from bad work productivity, the consequences of working too much can lead to anxiety, stress, being alone, and general bad health and fitness.

But your business won't operate by itself and you can't afford to hire somebody full-time. Maybe it's time to outsource some jobs to a virtual assistant.
Can A Virtual Assistant Help You?
A virtual assistant (VA) is similar to a private assistant that you connect with online and outsource work to them to do for you. Some VAs work on their own and some work via various websites as a way to more easily find clients.
They can charge on an hourly basis, by each task, or you can pay a monthly fee for services. Many VAs are happy to work out a fee framework with you that suits you both.
Only Pay For What You Need
You don't need to provide a VA with any resources to complete the tasks you need done. They should have everything that they need.

Using a VA actually can save you money, as well as time. You only pay for and seek the services of people to do work specifically when you need it. This means you can spend more time completing the tasks for your business that actually make money and take on extra work when it becomes available, as your VA can assist with the parts they can do.
How Can They Help You?
A VA can do a wide range tasks to help you in your online business. This includes administrative jobs, creation of content material, website construction and trouble-shooting or even social networking.
Some administrative duties are financial such as book-keeping, managing affiliate payouts, and keeping track of income sources. They can handle inbound and outbound email, sending certain kinds of email to you when your attention is required. They can also plan meetings, online seminars, or phone calls for you or help you plan your work week. This is particularly useful if you have difficulty with time management.
Your Success Is Their Success
Virtual assistants realize how vital it is to provide good work to you due to the fact your success is dependent upon the work they provide. The more successful you become, the more work that you will need them to complete for you.
The teach themselves to do jobs that are in demand. You simply use the skills you need for your projects, whether it's a long-term or on a project by project basis.
If you are spending too much time working, a virtual assistant can save you time and money. They free you up to do the most important tasks for your business. It's how the profitable online businesses generate the wealth and freedom their owners enjoy. Going Smaller With Lead Generation This 2018?

January 05, 2018 0
Going Smaller With Lead Generation This 2018?

There are only a few days left before 2017 finally comes to a close. You might have noticed that there are a lot of articles-more so than usual anyway--about incoming marketing trends and methods for 2018, some of which may include B2B marketing and lead generation.

Amongst the sea of predicted oncoming trends, we've found a certain suggestion that is definitely worth noting, and perhaps even applying in your lead gen methods next year:
Going Smaller.
It is well known in the B2B marketing field that events and conventions are gold mines for getting leads.
According to a lead generation research report by marketing blog Chief Marketer,
"... live events tied with SEO as the second most effective channel for producing the highest ROI leads."
Putting this into consideration, one of the site's writers also a marketer, notes that their efforts in local business lead generation were much more effective when they did not join in large events. They actually found that it was more efficient to host small events on their own.
The writer states that:
"Instead of trying to get in front of as many prospects as possible, what if we just got in front of the right prospects, where we controlled the environment without any competitors in the room?"
When you think about it, it does make sense. Having a mindset of "quality over quantity" is important when it comes to B2B marketing. It is not about how many leads you get; it doesn't matter if most of them can't be converted in the end, anyway. What is important is finding the right people.
Imagine this scenario:
You're a marketer for a software development company. You go to a major event and manage to snag a hundred leads. Feels great right? But in the end, after contacting all of them, only ten of the leads decide to avail your services. It seems like you worked so hard for so little, right?

Now picture this next scenario:
What if you organized a small convention for your company? Only fifteen people attend, and it feels like you've failed miserably in advertising. But alas, they all agree to enter into a deal with you. The small number lets you promote your services with a more personal touch, since you have more time to spend with each lead.
In which situation did you gain the most from? Which was the more efficient method for you?
Scaling down your efforts and targeting a smaller but more relevant pool might actually work better for you. After all, you'll be aiming straight for the people that are the most likely to sign a contract with your business. What's important now is that you analyze your data more closely in order to make your lead targeting more precise.
But this philosophy doesn't have to apply only in events where you have to do the promoting in person. You can also do this in, say, social media. Among all the social media channels, LinkedIn by far has the most promise for B2B lead generation. So instead of casting a wide net on different sites like Facebook and Twitter-the latter of which doesn't have a great track record in B2B-why not focus more on LinkedIn?
Going smaller may seem counteractive if you want to get more business, but it's actually the opposite. It makes you less likely to waste time on ineffective leads, and helps you improve your targeting game with local business lead generation.

A Happily Ever After for Chatbots & Messaging Apps?

December 27, 2017 0
A Happily Ever After for Chatbots & Messaging Apps?

On the aftermath of their debut on messaging apps, chatbots have been at the epicenter of an ongoing conversation about personalisation. Why did this collaboration happen? And how far will this go? It's time to take a deep dive.
In the '60s, renowned media analyst Marshall McLuhan argued that the 'Medium is the message'. He was certain that it had a role in shaping and controlling "the scale and form of human association and action" up to an extent. According to this theory, the medium embeds itself onto anything it transmits, and it directly influences the way the actual message is perceived. It tries to be an extension of our senses, expanding our ability to perceive and interact with the world.

Today, about half a century later, the medium becomes an acceptable form of human interaction - say hello to your messaging apps. As of last year, there were 1 billion users (14% of the world's population) on WhatsApp. And combined with the users on Messenger, there are 60 billion messages - text, video, recordings that are sent and received each day. Where else would businesses find a better level of engagement?
In a recent survey conducted by Facebook, participants who could chat with retailers on these messaging platforms, be it on transactions, inquiries, or post sales services, felt more positive about the business. Commerce became a personal affair. McLuhan was right, and is still right - The impact of messaging does lie on the medium.

It's been almost 20 years, and why haven't businesses been largely successful harnessing these platforms yet? Because until chatbots came along in 2016, businesses marketing themselves via messaging apps were oblivious to one philosophy/brand of personalisation - 'If not human, be humane.'
Ever since they entered the market, chatbots on messaging platforms have been hit. They are having a positive impact on businesses, as more industries are jumping aboard the 'personalisation' bandwagon. Now, what is the next step? What does the future behold for this eclectic union? Here are 3 possibilities -
  • With chatbots, messaging apps will become the new browsers. They are about to do for businesses what websites were doing for them about a decade back. Forrester Research expects investments in AI and Machine Learning to triple in 2017, to better harness user behavior, to enhance the conversational interface brought about by bots.
  • Messaging apps will become more relevant to IoT installations. For e.g. more customers will begin to receive coupons, notifications on sales etc. via messages when they happen to just pass by the store. Or alternatively, employees in a factory can stay better connected with their machinery, and make better use of the data collected.
  • The 'App culture' is sinking, as users are getting more tight-fisted about device memory and data usage. But messaging apps/platforms are still titled 'essential' because messaging is now a way of life. Since chatbot platforms can directly deploy bots onto these apps, the need for a proprietary app is canceled. And the scope of services that businesses offer on these apps can keep expanding.
With the advancement in AI and Machine Learning towards its capabilities, chatbots are about to go a long way in understanding the nitty-gritty human behavior through messaging apps. But if McLuhan's theory still holds good a decade from now, chatbots might even become a critical part of human perception overall.

How to Make Your Website More Click-Worthy

December 13, 2017 0
How to Make Your Website More Click-Worthy

If you have a great content on your website but visitors find it difficult to find them, it is a complete waste of your time, effort, resources, and that of your visitors too. In addition to helping your visitors find important information, your website should also have such an impact on them that they will be prompted to make a move as expected.
In this article, I will give you some useful tips that will increase your website's appeal and make it click-worthy.

Before I proceed with the tips, what does it mean when a website is said to be click-worthy? In addition to the general belief that the website should be worthy of being clicked and viewed or read, the idea is that users should find it convenient to find any important information they need and be motivated to take action. It is important to be aware of this definition because viewing your website is of little importance if your visitors are not moved to take action. Whatever action they take benefits you more than simply visiting your site for fun.
Having said that, here are some tips to increase the click-worthiness of your site:
1. Have some goals: This is the first thing you need to do before embarking on the design of your website. Having definite goal will increase the relevance of the website to some people. This, in turn, will lead to more appreciation as the intended audience have their needs met.

To set goals for your website, you need to ask yourself some questions such as:
  • What is the objective of this website?
  • Do you want to use it to sell a product or a service?
Without setting some goals for your website, you will find it difficult to align your content to meet some specific needs. As such, there won't be any target audience and that will impact negatively on the click-worthiness of the website.
2. Use lots of verbs: When writing the content of your website, cultivate the habit of using verbs to spur your readers to action. This should start with your heading. You should increase its attractiveness by using verbs to call your readers to action. Some typical examples of such headlines are:
  • Discover how to fortify your website security.
  • Build your business website with easy.
  • Find practical ways to increase your website conversion.
