It now helps me to begin any activity, be it it in business or in life, with a clear vision of the end goal or the exit strategy. It's a fundamental for any business - Define the Vision?, What is the Goal?. It gives us a clear reason for why we are in business in the first place and a reference point of navigation should we veer off course.
However, in all to many cases we as business owners and entreunpeners are not specific enough in defining what it is that we are actually trying to achieve in both our business and personal lives. This leads to a great deal of uncertainty for what the future holds.
We each have personal reasons for getting into business that are often general in the sense that we want to make money or have a comfortable life or have more flexability. Each stemming from the common romantic notion that owning your own business will allow us to gain control and succeed in these areas.
But because we are so non-specific we often find ourselves lost in our businesses, simply drifting along from day to day with the intention to develop and grow but never really getting the time to work on the key tasks.
This reality paints a very sad picture and we can find ourselves onboard a rudderless ship drifting in an ocean, leaving our future to chance with the changing tides. This is particularly true today especially when you look at the level of digital disruption present across all industries and many small business owners are lost amongst the noise.
It really is a time of rapid change and like it or not the conventional business model of the stand alone bricks and mortar shop is rapidly becoming extinct. This is, unless online and digital is embraced and utilised effectively, then coexistence and rapid growth can be a very real result.
So it really is gut-check time!
